Comfort in the Kitchen

I’m not your therapist, but let’s take a deep breath and rap about comfort. As a dude who knows his way around a kitchen, one complaint I hear a lot is not feeling ok cooking. Whether you cook for fun or just to survive, you won’t like what you cook if you don’t feel good cooking it.

Think about every rushed “meal” you’ve ever had. As a recovering degenerate, I’ve forced horrors upon my kitchen beyond human measure. The core of those poor meals was the fact that I never took time to get comfortable cooking. I was just moving around a space doing something with little thought. As you can imagine, I was shocked when my food was less than fine. I think it boils down to two things; kitchen and recipe choice.

My first piece of advice is to get familiar with your kitchen. A good start to any recipe is knowing where all your tools (pans, pots, knives, etc.) are. Look into your fridge every once in a while too. It sucks being in the middle of something and boom spoiled cheese. What now, officer?

You NEED to pick recipes that match YOUR skill. If you’ve only made noodles in life, maybe try chicken thighs before you try wagyu. If you cook something you’re not ready for you’ll just reinforce that voice that says you can’t cook. That voice is stupid and probably has warrants. Start small and enjoy it. Grab some vegetables, broth, and make a quick soup. Food doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t have to be stressed making it.

I’m still not your therapist, but I hope this helped. Cooking can be a wonderful tool to make your day a tad nicer. We all need that sometimes. Just make sure you know what you have and what you can do. Oh and don’t let TikTok stunt food drive you crazy. That shit sucks even if you can cook it.
